Hot, humid weather didn’t stop longtime members Ed & Ida Vlach from playing their daily nine this past Tuesday; Ed, a member since the early 1950s, is a former club champion (twice); Ida, at 90, still carries her clubs. Bravo!

Hugh Clark: An AGC Legend Posted July 1, 2013

Off

Hugh Clark, who made his first birdie at Amherst Golf Club in the 1930s, was feted during a recent ceremony at the club, held a few days before he moved to Florida. He received a plaque signed by many of his AGC friends, including our PGA pro Dave Twohig. As was said of Wiill Rogers, anyone lucky enough to know Hugh was a friend. An excellent golfer in his heyday, who won many tournament events and countless friendly presses, Hugh always had a big smile and strong handshake for everyone with whom he played. Long retired as the arborist at UMass, he was a tireless volunteer on club committees, dating back to an era when the club was the center of social activity for its members. He was also a voracious reader, making any round with him an opportunity for those in his foursome to discuss a wide range of subjects and interests. An avid competitor, whether on the course or at the weekly card table, he never took golf too seriously, invariably finding something to prompt his hearty laughter…such as the two holes-in-one he scored on the 9th green–from the eighth tee! We will miss him and his lovely wife Laurie.
