Coach David Hixon Elected to Basketball Hall of Fame Posted April 4, 2023
Off
Amherst Golf Club would like to congratulate Coach David Hixon on the rare honor of being elected to the 2023 Inductee Class for the Basketball Hall of Fame . . . from the Amherst College website:
Hixon coached at Amherst for 42 years, winning two national championships and twice being named Div. III Coach of the Year. He compiled a coaching record of 826-293, ranking him 15th in NCAA men’s basketball when he retired in April 2020. His winning percentage of .738 was good for 10th place in NCAA Division III history at the time of his retirement.
In the Hixon era, Amherst participated in the NCAA national tournament 20 times and compiled a 43-20 postseason record.Hixon is the first Div. III coach to earn enshrinement into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He was elected to the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003. In May of 2022, the floor at Amherst’s LeFrak Gymnasium was named Hixon Court.”I remember in the fall of 1973, myself and some friends were sitting around the dorm at Amherst and someone asked, “where do you see yourself in 10 years?,” Hixon recalled. “One said doctor and became a doctor, one said working with computers and worked at IBM, one said psychology/psychiatry and ended up working in that field. I said I wanted to be the next men’s basketball coach at Amherst. That’s all I ever wanted.”
David and his wife Coach Mandy Hixon, who is also a decorated coach, are frequent morning golfers at the course, and are usually one of the first players out on the weekdays. Last May, the Club hosted a the “Hixon Golf Outing” that was part of the celebration of Amherst College naming it’s basketball facility “Hixon Court”. The outing was attended by David and his family, many of his friends and colleagues, and a plethora of David’s former players, including some foursomes consisting of players from his national championship teams.
AGC Member and Amherst College Director of Athletics, Don Faulstick, said it well: “What an amazing and deserving accomplishment. I’m very happy for Dave, his family and all his former assistants and players. Dave also had a “hall of fame ” impact on many coaches and students within Amherst athletics over his 42 years. It’s the ultimate pinnacle on such an amazing career.”
